Try Adding Sound to the Machinima (AVI) – Using Visual Dub and then Uploading (Part 3)

This is the third and final part of my quick and dirty second life video, was the addition of music with VisualDub. When recording the second life home movie, the SL client did not record the sound so I thought I would add my own.

If the tool you are using allows you to record the sound that may be a good thing, you may be able to use the new features in Second Life that allow you to see the mouths of avatar’s move while people are using voice chat. See this article on LipSync the new feature in the new release candidate SL client.

Adding sound to the file was easy was VisualDub. All that was needed was to change the audio to “Wav” and then the software prompted me for what wave file I would like use to add to the video. I added it and bingo bango bongo… the music was there.

All finished, now I need to get it to a video hosting server so I can show it on my blog. Easy right?

Little did I know that uploading this video to a video service that worked how I wanted it to with WordPress was going to be a little tricky.

MSN Video

I tried using MSN Video to upload my video on to the Internet where I am serving up the video for this blog. This is was my first use of MSN Video as well (MSN Video was once called Soapbox when it was beta.) I needed to cut the file further because MSN would not allow a file over 100 MB. It was a little bit annoying because with the addition of sound the file came out to about 98 MB which still triggered the file size police over at Microsoft. So I had to cut the file down a few more frames to about 96 MB.

After all this tinkering to get the file uploaded to MSN, I found that WordPress will not work with MSN Video without having to leave the blog page to go to the MSN site to view the video. Well that is not very convenient and it doesn’t play well with how I want my blog to run.

Google Video

WordPress will work with Google video, so I have uploaded my video there. As I uploaded my first video on to Google’s site I noticed that there really is no progress bar, well other than friendly colored balls moving back and forth across the screen. Would be nice if they had something showing a little more status so I know if the upload has failed or not. I decide to use the desktop video uploader, which has a much more satisfying progress bar. The I had the most frustrating thing happen, the video uploaded, and the status was “live”, but the video wouldn’t play. I decided to let it “process” over night, and check it when I got up in the morning. Still nothing. The video was marked “live” and the video still would not play.

After some research, it appeared that others were having the same problem. Some had the theory that this was Google’s way of not having any more content added to their servers. Since Google has purchased YouTube, that theory kind of fits with me.

YouTube

So… then I created a YouTube account to host my video. I was little unhappy with this because I wanted a service that my video would not be publicly searchable. Unlike the millions who use YouTube, who want “Broadcast Themselves”, I just want to upload the video so I can show it on this blog. But unlike Google and MSN Video there seems to be no way of setting the properties on the uploaded video to reduce its ability to be indexed by their search engine.

As I had somehow expected, YouTube worked.

Well, it took me about an hour total to get this video together, and hours to get it online. Here is final video I created. It is rough, but it shows what you can do fairly quickly with Second Life, Visualdub, and YouTube. Give it a try…

Neat huh?
