Excerpt from “When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times” by Pema Chodron:
“The teachings of Buddhism are directed at people who don’t have a lot of time to waste. That includes all of us, whether we’re aware of it or not. From the point of view of the teachings, thinking that we have ample time to do things later is the greatest myth, the greatest hang-up, and the greatest poison. That along with our continual, deep seated tendency to try to get away from what we are doing, clouds our perceptions and out thinking. If we know that tonight we were going to go blind, we would take a longing, least real look at every blade of grass, every cloud formation, every speck of dust, every rainbow, – everything. If we knew that we were going to be deaf tomorrow, we would treasure every single sound we heard. The teachings of the vajrayana try to scare us into waking up to how little time there is to the preciousness of human birth.”

I have really enjoyed reading Pema. The first book I had the chance of reading by her was “Start Where You Are.” Both books amaze me at the depth of the topics at hand, their usefulness, and the brevity of the book. Pema applies herself to the subject with clear focus and a refreshing honesty, as she attempts to give us tools we can use to help us be more content in our journey.
When I first read “Start Where You Are,” I was so impressed by the subject matter that I told myself that I would try to read the book once a year since then. I have actually kept to reading that promise. Each reading has brought me a little more insight to myself and where I am at that point in time. I see “When Things Fall Apart” as no less useful a book.
Although the book is called “When Things Fall Apart” perhaps it could also be called, “For When You Get Comfortable,” or “What Are You Stuck on Today?” It is really a book about “Heart Advice for ANY Time” and is as good as chicken soup, or closer at times to a swift kick in the butt.
I dig it -DV
