Garden Invaders: The Soft Cuddly Kind

I got all busy writing and posting other stuff that I didn’t post this weekends garden post.  So here it is.  Smiles… Oh… and I added another picture to the end of what I saw today. -DV

This weekend was not a good weekend to go out gardening. The sky was overcast, my left breast was hurting, and an old friend of mine came over to hang out – so priorities being what they are, gardening was not on the schedule for this weekend.

After giving my friend the short tour of the progress in the garden, the wine and cheeses came out… yummmmm… wine and cheeses. As we sat on the deck, my friend spied the two of the cutest garden invaders resting in the grass where the debris pile used to be. I turned to look and was surprised that our two new friends, that my friends spotted, were not Mr. Blue and Mr. Yellow doing their normal frolicking. They were tiny little deer… These little fawns couldn’t be very old at all, and I don’t doubt that they were the smallest deer I have seen in my garden.

In the picture above, shows how well the second little fawn was camouflaged. See the little dark spot in the photo where he was resting? These little guys had to be maybe about a foot and a half in height.

I’m sorry for the quality of the pictures. These were taken with my phone camera. We attempted to get the photos without scaring away our new little friends (I really should have thought to get my other camera.)  Looking around, there was no sign of the mama, so we decided to let my other-half risk a confrontation.  Smiles… Mating season is over… but it is still so manly to risk maiming one’s self for cool pictures. Smiles real wide…

(I have to warn you the video below is a little over the top…)

The cats…

I found it quite curious that Mr. Blue decided to leave the little guys alone and hunt for the bigger prey. I have seen him do this before, but not quite on this scale.  Just last week I  missed a photo opportunity where I saw Mr. Blue hunting a two year old buck. Silly Mr. Blue.

A few minutes after these photos of the babies were taken, the buck showed up, and once again Mr. Blue took on the prowl. We call it good training. We have instructed Mr. Blue that he needs to bring back a good sized kill. We are also trying to train Mr. Yellow to clean the kill once it has been fetched. This training could take a while.

Super cuties….

I really love watching the deer grow up in our yard. Watching them come and go each year is just one of the things I really enjoy about living here.

Hope you have all had a wonderful weekend – DV

More picture from this week…

Since I have been spending time in the yard this week , I have see the little guys on and off now.  I was a little worried that one of them was hurt or worse, when I saw only one with the mama.

Here is one of the little guys getting lunch from mama.

And here is the other little guy safe and sound visiting me this afternoon.  So adorable…
