But why wings? – How to make fairy wings…
I wasn’t born very long ago…
Dharma Voyager was born on October 30th 2006 after a good buddy of mine convinced me to explore a place called Second Life (SL). It wasn’t hours after I was born into Second Life, that I grew my first set of wings. Actually, the first wings I took to wearing in Second Life, are the same wings I still wear.
So, I guess, almost as long as I have been alive, I have had wings. And before I was born I wanted them. It only made sense that I would have them.
So… am I a fairy? Some people call me a fairy. Some call me a pixie… but I bite them.
I usually live by myself in my garden. I make things. Mainly for people I love to be around. They are not fairies… I actually don’t know many fairies. Oh, I have met a few on my journeys. A couple even have frolicked with me in my own garden (is that what fairies do?) But most of my friends in Second Life are not fairies.
Many of my friends, especially newer friends, have always asked me this one strange question, “But why wings?”
So tonight, as I rest in the beautiful Second Life sunset, relaxing on one the many giant mushrooms in my amanita garden, I ponder the question, “Why would someone in Second Life wear wings?”
This question is still strange to me.
Usually, when asked, all I can do is scratch my head and ask back, “What do you mean?”
Then they kind of re-ask, “You know, why are you wearing wings all the time?”
I hope they don’t feel bad when a confused look comes over my face. It is usually the same look that I see on people when I ask them, “Why are you so tall?”
I really don’t have an answer for the “why wings” question… I guess I just like em…
Making my wings…
So, earlier today, I was chattering on the phone with an SL pal and out came the secret desire that I have always wanted to make a set of wings. I knew that the stuff I had around the house was limited, and of course they were not going to be as nice as my SL wings, but to my usual form I thought it would be neat to see what I could come with rather quickly. Of course this first pair would be far from perfect…
My friend on the other end of the line could hardly believe it as I grabbed some hangers from the closet… And then I began…
So here was my first attempt at making wings. I tried to make something like the wings my SL friends have grown used to seeing me in:
Step 1:
Step 2:
Step 3:
Step 4:
Step 5:
Step 6:
Step 7:
And there you have it…. my newest set of wings…
My other half helped me on with my wings when he got home.
I pouted as my left one drooped just a little…
… he told me everything would be ok. A little more duct tape, some spackle and it would perk back up in no time… giggles…
Of course, the next set of wings I make will be so much better.
Aren’t we lucky we can have as many sets of wings as we’d like?

You know… I thought these might run a little small on me.
I think they look pretty good… what do you think?

Stevie!!!!! Wow… they let you read blogs? hehheheheh….
Oh, that must have been soooo long ago. I have not shopped for wings probably since that time. I don’t remember which ones we got when went shopping, but I know I have about three pair that I purchased. I still use my angle wings sometimes… these days for my lion. She looks kind of cool flying with wings. (I wanted to add a picture here but I’m having a bit of trouble with the wordpress editor… )
I actually bought some tattoos after filming today… heheheh… I went to a world beat festival this past weekend, and they themed Polynesian this year. So I went out and got me AV some Polynesian tats… I’ll wear them to tomorrows reading group if you are there.
Hugs and smiles…
