Planning a Vacation – The Start of a Road Trip

Earlier this year, I took a road trip. I have mentioned it before in the blog somewhere. Basically, I rescued a friend from Illinois. She and Illinois just did not agree with one another. On that trip I did all the driving to get her back here, which is good; my friend, although not scared of much on this planet, is very afraid of driving. It was a beautiful drive, and outside of my friend sadness and frustration, very peaceful. There were certainly parts of that drive that I wanted to make again under better circumstances.

I have really loved long road trips since I was a little girl. I am quite thankful that my other half has learned to share that same appreciation for the road that I have. So on that long road rescue trip, I called my other half from the road. It was on my cell phone that we had made the decision. Although, gas prices are through the roof this year we would schedule the time off this year, get a plan together, get the car camping gear ready, and head for more eastern climates.

We have only just started planning the trip, my other half is in charge this time, and so far he has done some pretty wonderful planning. He had a really cool idea, and has actually traced a list of scenic roadways in a huge circle for a 14 day journey. He loaded up the route Google maps.

Unfortunately, the feature that would allow me to put the map dynamically into the blog does not seem to be working. Bummer. Time for some images. There seems to be some features on Google map that I had not noticed before. You can click on the map and see photos and Wikipedia articles. Neat.

For now here is the initial brainstorming, provided by my better and smarter half:

Leg 1

trip1

Leg 2.

Trip2

Way Too Long

This trip will be about 14 days, and my other half was nice enough to throw in some of the thing we would love to do if we had all the time in the world. I love the thought of driving up historic Route 66. Isn’t he special? Wonderful thinking, but I’m not sure we will be able to make it this trip.

The fantasy trip outlined above will take about 9 days driving. I’m thinking I would like to settle down a bit on this trip and make someplace home, at least for a few days. Probably somewhere around Yellowstone. So we will be chopping off the second leg for now. (Ouch!) I’m not sure I want to drive through the desert in August anyway.

Focusing on What we Want and Can Do

So now we are cutting back the focus to Yellowstone and the US Rockies. A couple years ago we drove all along the Canadian Rockies and it was simply wonderful. Now the question is how far along the Rockies we will go before turning back home.

Stay Tuned…

I realize its not in your itenary, but I hertily recommend visiting Carson City, NV if you can. 1 hour from Reno, Lake Tahoe, & Virginia City. It is a beautiful place for a couple day’s stop.

I’m not sure we will have the time this time to explore that area, although now you have peeked my curiosity.

Thank you very much for the tip :)
