A Day of Goofin with Music
Well, this weekend I decided to fight our the rest of my cold and recover from my jury duty at home. The weather was beautiful and while watching it from inside, I sat down in front of my laptop, with my trusty guitar and microphone and decided to work with this idea I had been toying with in the Power Tab software. It is kind of a mix between classical and modern, mixing time and instruments.
Last week I had found myself a string instrument music generator and mixed sounds into the mix as well. I was too lazy hook up my keyboard and use it to control the MIDI instruments so I used my mouse to play the instruments. The outcome: it sounds a bit like I used a mouse to play the instruments. This is the first time I really used some completely electronic musical instruments (I don’t include my Roland drums in this because there is still a physical element) in a mix. In a way, using instruments like these feels a little like taking the easy way out, using electronic violins, cellos, and a couple drums. It is still kind of neat. I suppose I could spend years trying to learn the instruments, or find and play violin and cello players, or just go electronic.
I was kind of excited. I really wanted a song I could try to use my Jewish Harps that I had picked up a few months ago on my vacation in the article “Day2: There’s Something Beautiful about Trains and Instruments.” I was able to use the instruments in the mix and didn’t add any reverb. The first mix came out pretty good. Not bad for a one day experiment.
I’m not singing in this one so I’m much more comfortable in sharing. If you want to give it a listen, come find me in second life.
